Non-Test Assessments

MELC / Homeschool Helps offers non-test assessments to homeschoolers as one of the state-approved methods to fulfill the law regarding the annual assessment of students who are educated at home. The law does not define the non-test assessments except as to who would administer it: a certified teacher currently working in the field of education. MELC offers customized non-test assessments to meet the needs of the families.

Our most frequently chosen option is the Peabody Individual Achievement Test- Revised. The purpose of the PIAT-R is to provide a wide range, screening measure of achievement in the areas of mathematics, reading, spelling, general information and a neurodevelopmental screening. This test is given orally and individually. Administration of the assessment and parent consultation time is approximately one and a half to two hours. As a standard part of the non-test assessment I give a neurodevelopmental screening. The flat rate for an assessment of general information, reading recognition, reading comprehension, mathematics and spelling is $50.00 for up to two hours. For any additional time the cost will be $10.00 for each additional 30 minutes or portion. Parents will take home a form with a chart graphing the child’s progress in the 5 different areas, results of the neurodevelopmental screening and other comments related to the assessment.

I no longer use the PIAT-R writing portion, as it does not provide any help for the parent in knowing what to teach their student. An optional writing sample may be submitted. For a one-page submission, I will provide criteria of what needs work, and one “instructional module” related to one area. This can be either one paragraph or one short five-paragraph essay. The fee for one page is $10.00 when it accompanies a non-test assessment or a standardized test. If it is isolated, the first time will be $25.00 and $10.00 additional times. Some families may choose to get this help in writing frequently. (Request information regarding our online writing classes.)

Other options or items that can be added such as: reading from a book of the student’s choice to determine readability level; diagnostic reading or math tests, etc. Please discuss these options with your test administrator.
